Japheth Munala, the head coach of the KCB Women’s volleyball team, has expressed his strong desire to see his team clinch the trophy that has eluded them for the past 15 years in anticipation of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Playoffs.
Scheduled to take place from October 2nd to 4th at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), the playoffs are a significant event in the volleyball calendar.
During a recent training session at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, Coach Japheth Munala expressed his readiness for the playoffs, emphasizing the ample time they’ve had to prepare. He said, “Our training commenced on Monday, and I eagerly anticipate our players embracing the grand stage with the goal of capturing a trophy that has remained beyond our reach for a decade and a half.”
KCB, the reigning 2022 African Club champions, secured the second position in the league phase of the season, just behind Kenya Pipeline, amassing 24 points. This positions them well for the highly anticipated showdown.
In the previous season’s playoffs, KCB suffered a 3-1 defeat to Kenya Pipeline, narrowly missing out on the title. However, they are optimistic that this year, they will emerge victorious, solidifying their status as both local and continental volleyball powerhouses.
Coach Munala, who led KCB to continental glory in 2022, is expected to announce his squad on Thursday. He has indicated his intention to provide opportunities for young players to shine on the grand stage.
The team is set to convene at the Kasarani Sports View Hotel on Friday morning as they intensify their preparations.
Excitingly, Marlene Terry, a standout from Kwanthanze High School who recently joined Munala’s squad, is likely to make her debut for the team in the upcoming fixtures as she currently undergoes training with the squad.
KCB’s campaign kicks off on Monday with a match against Kenya Prisons, followed by a clash with DCI on Tuesday. They will conclude the season with a thrilling encounter against their formidable rivals, Kenya Pipeline, on Wednesday afternoon.
