Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba presided over the initiation of renovation activities at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday.
The comprehensive refurbishment of the 60,000-seater facility is set to begin immediately in preparation for the AFCON 2027.
In his announcement, the CS declared the complete closure of the facility during the renovation period, emphasizing that “any other activity will not be allowed in this area (Kasarani); it will be closed to all activities.” Ababu assured that alternative sites have been identified for sporting events such as the Kipchoge Keino Classic, ensuring their continuity during the construction phase.
Ababu outlined key areas earmarked for improvement, including a total overhaul of the roof, lighting enhancements, and the introduction of VAR booths. “We will be undertaking a major overhaul of this stadium, reducing it to twenty-four essential areas of improvement,” stated Ababu. Notably, the stadium’s new roof will extend to 32 meters and be made of PTFE or Teflon.
Additional renovations highlighted by the CS encompass a revamp of the drainage system, upgrading of changing rooms, and the installation of a comprehensive animation screen. The military will oversee the renovation works, with Ministry of Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru assuring that the project will be completed within one year, adhering to the set timelines and budget.
“I want to commit to the country that this work will be done within one year. It will be done within one year and also within the set budget and within the highest standard. I’m committing that on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF),” affirmed Mariru.
Kasarani is among the three stadiums slated for renovations ahead of AFCON 2027, where Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the prestigious event.
