Absa Kenya has announced its sponsorship of the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic, which is scheduled to take place on May 13 at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
The bank has doubled its sponsorship to KES 60 million, up from KES 23 million that was released for last year’s event.
Abdi Mohamed, the managing director of Absa Kenya, said that the sponsorship will see KES 50 million go towards cash prizes and logistics, among other things, making it their largest investment.
Mohamed also stated that KES 10 million will cover expenses for the Sirikwa Classic World Athletics Cross Country Tour, which was held on February 4 in Eldoret, and for Team Kenya at the recently concluded Africa Athletics Under-18 and Under-20 Championships.
This year’s sponsorship marks the bank’s biggest investment in sports, with the total investment now standing at close to KES 100 million over three editions of the Kip Keino Classic.
The bank’s drive to fund sports in the country is derived from its “Africanacity” campaign, which embraces the African spirit that always finds unique ways of getting things done regardless of the situation.
The sponsorship cheque was handed over to Sports Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke and Kip Keino Meet Director Barnaba Korir and Meet Manager Kennedy Tanui at a ceremony at the Safari Park Hotel on Friday.
