AC Milan’s Olivier Giroud has been handed a two-game suspension for directing a volley of abuse at officials at the end of their controversial 2-2 draw against Lecce, according to Serie A’s announcement on Tuesday.
The French striker received a red card in stoppage time after expressing “abusive expressions” towards referee Rosario Abisso, following an initial booking for dissent. Giroud, who has netted eight goals this season, will miss upcoming home matches against Fiorentina and Frosinone after the international break.
Referee Abisso was at the centre of controversy as Lecce’s potential comeback was thwarted when Roberto Piccoli’s apparent winning goal was disallowed due to a perceived foul in the buildup. The decision angered fans, president Saverio Sticchi Damiani, and Lecce’s players and staff.
Saverio Sticchi Damiani has been banned until December 4 for “intimidatory behaviour towards match officials” and threats made in the dressing rooms after the match.
He hinted at a conspiracy, accusing Abisso and VAR officials of scrutinizing minutiae to nullify the goal.
Sporting director Stefano Trinchera received a three-match ban and a 10,000 euros ($10,900) fine for similar offences aggravated by “blasphemy,” while CEO Sandro Mencucci was suspended until November 27. Despite avoiding defeat, Milan fell eight points behind league leaders and local rivals Inter Milan.
