AFC Leopards have bolstered their squad by signing Ugandan goalkeeper Cleo James Ssetuba from Kakamega Homeboyz on a two-year contract.
The 28-year-old shot-stopper expressed his enthusiasm about joining the 12-time league champions, describing the move as a dream come true.
“I am happy to have finally made this move. I feel good and relieved to join such a big and historical team. It is a privilege to be here because it is a dream for any player to get such an opportunity,” Ssetuba said.
Ssetuba began his football journey in his hometown at Entebbe Young Academy before advancing to Proline Academy, where he honed his skills and earned promotion to the senior team. His career includes stints with URA, Solito Black Stars, and Wakiso Giants in Uganda; Sony Sugar FC in Kenya; and Biashara United and FC Ihefu in Tanzania. Notably, during his tenure with Biashara United, he participated in the CAF Confederation Cup.
In March 2023, Ssetuba joined Kakamega Homeboyz, contributing to their FKF Mozzartbet Cup victory the same year, which secured them a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup. They faced Al Hilal of Libya in the first round, exiting with a 4-1 aggregate loss.
At AFC Leopards, Ssetuba will compete for the starting goalkeeper position alongside Levis Opiyo, Humphrey Katasi, and Abubakar Musha. He has been assigned jersey number 28 and has already commenced training with his new teammates.
“I love the way the fans support the team. They travel around with the team, and it’s a big motivation for us to do better. My target is to be a champion with the team and be the best goalkeeper in the league,” Ssetuba added.
AFC Leopards currently hold fourth place in the league standings with 33 points, just two points behind third-placed Gor Mahia and eight points adrift of leaders Kenya Police. Their next challenge comes on Wednesday when they face Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium.
The club has been active in the transfer market, with James Ssetuba joining a list of recent signings, including Sydney Lokale (FC Saint Eloi Lupopo), Peter Maker Mabok (Radnicki SM), Julius Masaba (Kariobangi Sharks FC), and Samuel Semo Mbaja (Murang’a Seal FC).
AFC Leopards extends a warm welcome to Ssetuba and looks forward to his impact in the upcoming matches.
