AFCON Champions Ivory Coast Held By Benin In Friendly
Ivory Coast staged a remarkable comeback twice to secure a 2-2 draw against Benin in a highly anticipated match on Saturday. This encounter marked the African champions’ first game since clinching their third AFCON title in February.
Junior Olaitan, showcasing his talent, netted two goals for the 98th-ranked Benin, posing a significant threat to Ivory Coast’s aspirations in Amiens, France.
However, the Elephants found their footing as former Leeds and Bournemouth winger Max-Alain Gradel, aged 36, equalized just before the half-hour mark.
Gradel, in an emotional moment, shed tears as he scored in his farewell appearance for the team, a testament to his remarkable career with over 100 caps.
The drama continued as Oumar Diakite leveled the score once again in the 69th minute, ensuring Ivory Coast avoided defeat in their maiden match since their thrilling AFCON final victory over Nigeria. Despite a revamped lineup, the Ivorian side displayed resilience, salvaging a draw and maintaining their unbeaten streak.
