AFCON U20 2023. Senegal wins the AFCON U20 trophy

Posted on

It’s the 4th championship title in a row for The Cubs of Teranga after defeating neighbors Gambia 2-0 in the AFCON U20 finals held at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt on Saturday night.

Having previously made it to the final in 2015, 2017, and 2019 but falling short each time, Senegal began the final on a strong note, taking the lead in the 6th minute through Souleymane Faye’s header from Pape Diallo’s cross and maintaining their lead throughout the first half.

Gambia came out strong in the second half, seeking to equalize and force extra time, but their efforts were quashed by a defensive error that allowed the tournament’s best player, Mamadou Camara, to score and secure a 2-0 victory for Senegal.

This win solidifies Senegal’s position as an African football giant, having previously won the Senior AFCON, CHAN, beach soccer, and AFCON under 23.
