The NBA’s Deputy Commissioner, Mark Tatum, has expressed his confidence in the wealth of basketball talent within Africa that will continue to shine on the world stage.

Tatum believes that the continent is blessed with numerous players capable of emulating their predecessors who have made their mark in the prestigious U.S.-based league.

Tatum highlighted the Basketball Africa League (BAL) as a testament to the NBA’s commitment to Africa, and the league has already seen the emergence of exciting talent. He pointed out that there were several players from the BAL who competed in the recent FIBA World Cup, including the South Sudan team, which qualified for the Olympics for the first time.

Tatum also mentioned prospects from the NBA Academy in Senegal who are expected to join the NBA and be drafted in the coming years.

The NBA’s expansion into Africa goes beyond player development; it also represents a significant business opportunity. The league’s creation of NBA Africa as a separate entity reflects its investment in sports infrastructure and programs tailored to the African audience.

Tatum believes that the future is promising for African talent in the NBA, as well as for the growth of sports-related businesses in Africa.

The NBA has been actively extending its presence in Africa, opening offices in Johannesburg, Senegal, Nigeria, and Egypt. Initiatives like the Basketball Without Borders Africa program and mentorship clinics have contributed to the growth of basketball at the grassroots level.

Tatum expressed pride in the increasing number of international players in the NBA, emphasizing the league’s support for its players representing their national teams. He highlighted that the NBA continues to see more players competing for their countries in international competitions.

The 2023/2024 NBA season is set to begin, with numerous international players expected to shine on the court.

Tatum also highlighted the NBA App’s enhanced features, allowing users to access real-time content, multiple team and player tabs, and unique programming to keep basketball enthusiasts informed and engaged.
