Kenya’s Lionesses emerged victorious in the 3×3 Africa Cup, claiming a narrow 21-20 win in a thrilling final match against hosts and top-ranked Egypt in Cairo.
With the score at 20-19 in favor of Egypt and only 3.2 seconds left, Natalie Akinyi, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, sank a dramatic two-point buzzer-beater to secure the championship for Kenya.
Captain Mercy Wanyama played a crucial role by providing the assist to Akinyi, who delivered the game-winning shot from beyond the arch.
Zetech University’s Medina Okot had an outstanding performance, contributing a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. The Lionesses’ journey to victory included a semifinal win against neighbors Uganda with a score of 16-14.
The men’s team, however, faced disappointment in their quest, losing 19-17 to Nigeria in overtime during the quarter-finals.
Despite the setback, the Lionesses’ triumph marks a significant achievement in the 3×3 basketball arena and propels them to the Universality One Olympic Qualifier.
