Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly secured their 11th CAF Champions League title in a thrilling encounter against Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club, triumphing 3-2 on aggregate.
In a fiercely contested second-leg match on Sunday night, Ahly displayed remarkable resilience as they fought back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against their Moroccan rivals.
The result allowed them to reclaim the prestigious title they had surrendered to Wydad in the previous season.
Wydad initially took the lead with Yahya Attiat Allah finding the net in the 28th minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. However, Ahly’s Mohamed Abdelmoneim turned the tide with a superb header, connecting with an Ali Maaloul corner 12 minutes before the final whistle. The goal ignited wild celebrations among the Ahly supporters in the packed stadium in Casablanca.
The victory marked a redemption for Al Ahly, who had suffered a 2-0 defeat to Wydad in last season’s final, held at the same venue.
Prior to Abdelmoneim’s decisive goal, Wydad seemed poised to retain the title with a 1-0 lead, which would have secured their consecutive championship victory and made them the first Moroccan team to achieve such a feat.
However, it was Al Ahly who emerged triumphant, leaving the Stade Mohamed V Complex with jubilation and the coveted trophy in their hands. The match showcased the intensity and tenacity of a classic North African derby, with limited scoring opportunities and a fierce midfield battle that captivated spectators.
