The stage is set for the Mombasa Open Tong Il Mo Doo competition, scheduled from Sunday to Monday at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.
Clarence Mwakio, the federation president, announced at a press conference held at the Mombasa Light International Academy that several teams, including Japan, Paraguay, India, Thailand, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Turkey, and Angola, have already arrived for the competition, with more expected in the evening.
Mwakio expressed gratitude for the support received from the government and other stakeholders ahead of the competition. He emphasized that this support serves as significant motivation for the federation and players, expressing hope for a successful title defense.
World Tong IL Mo Doo President Hoshiko Takamatsu commended Kenya’s commitment to the sport’s growth, noting the impressive efforts of the federation in spreading the game across the country.
Takamatsu expressed optimism about the sport’s potential inclusion in the Olympics, highlighting Kenya’s dedication to cultivating talent from a young age in schools.
The 11th edition of the tournament is set to commence on Sunday evening and conclude on Monday. Kenya, having triumphed in the previous ten editions, aims to continue its winning streak. The country has amassed a total of 185 medals in the previous editions of the competition.
