Kenya’s tennis sensation, Angela Okutoyi, is set to spearhead the nation’s campaign at the upcoming African Games in Accra, Ghana.
The accomplished player, who clinched the 2022 Wimbledon Open doubles juniors title, will headline a formidable women’s team as they vie for success on the continental stage.
Okutoyi, currently based in the United States, eyes the Pan African Games as a crucial stepping stone towards her aspirations of competing in the Paris Olympic Games. Joining Okutoyi in the women’s squad are seasoned players Cynthia Wanjala, known for her successful partnership with Okutoyi, Melissa Mwakha based in Zimbabwe, and debutant Stacy Yego.
Yego and Mwakha, making their national team debut, bring fresh talent and energy to the roster. However, Kael Shah will miss out on the opportunity due to academic commitments during the games.
On the men’s front, Kenya’s top seed Ismael Changawa Ruwa will lead the charge, accompanied by the formidable talents of Albert Njogu, reigning champion of the 2022 Rwanda Open, Ibrahim Kibet Yego, and Kevin Cheruiyot.
The team is gearing up for a rigorous seven-day residential training camp at Kasarani, alongside the rest of the African Games Kenyan delegation.
Expressing confidence in the squad, Tennis Kenya President James Kenani lauded the players’ dedication and teamwork during their intensive six-week training camp. Anticipation runs high for the team to deliver stellar performances and bring pride to the nation on the international stage.
“We have full faith in the abilities of our players,” remarked Kenani. “Their unwavering commitment is commendable, and we believe they will shine brightly at the biannual Games, commencing on March 8th.”
