Angella Okutoyi, the African Games champion, emerged victorious against Burundi’s Saada Nahimana in a thrilling Day Three of the Billie Jean King Cup at Nairobi Club.

The match, which ended with scores of 6-3, 6-4, was a testament to Okutoyi’s determination and skill, as she navigated through a challenging game that was as unpredictable as the day’s weather.

The Kenyan crowd’s support was palpable, providing a boost to Team Kenya and Okutoyi, who expressed her gratitude for the encouragement. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Nahimana putting up a strong fight, especially in the second set where she briefly led 2-1. However, Okutoyi’s resilience shone through as she regained control to secure the win.

Okutoyi’s performance was reflective of her mental preparation and adaptability on the court, particularly against Nahimana’s slicing technique, which provided a unique challenge and learning experience.

The day began on a high note for Kenya, with Cynthia Cheruto securing a win against Hoziane Kitambala, setting a positive tone for the team. Although Kenya faced a setback in the doubles match, the earlier victories ensured a favorable position for the team in Group B.

Reflecting on their journey, Okutoyi highlighted the team’s mental fortitude and the extensive match play that has contributed to their improved performance this year.

With anticipation, Kenya awaits their next challenge in the playoffs, facing either Nigeria or the top-seeded South Africa. The team’s spirit and tenacity suggest they are well-prepared for the upcoming battles.
