Angola Thrash Burkina Faso to Top AFCON Group D
In a decisive Group D clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Angola emerged victorious, defeating Burkina Faso 2-0 and claiming the top spot in the group.
The breakthrough for the Palancas Negras came nine minutes before halftime when Mabululu headed in Fredy’s free-kick. Despite Burkina Faso creating chances, Angola sealed the win in stoppage time with Zine’s close-range finish, securing their position at the top of the group.
Both teams had already secured their progress to the next stage before the match, owing to results in the final round of group games. Burkina Faso finished in second place after Mauritania’s 1-0 victory over Algeria.
Angola, entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked side in Group D, showcased resilience by earning a draw against Algeria in their opener and securing a thrilling 3-2 win over Mauritania, setting the stage for their qualification. This marks Angola’s first entry into the knockout stages since 2010 when they hosted the tournament.
The match in Yamoussoukro saw Angola capitalizing on their first real chance, with Mabululu’s header finding the net. Despite a relatively low-key second half, Burkina Faso had opportunities, but Angola’s defense held firm.
A late clash between Angola’s goalkeeper, Neblu, and Burkina Faso’s Abdoul Tapsoba added drama to the match, with Neblu receiving a yellow card for a handball just outside the area. Burkina Faso’s attempts to equalize in the final minutes were thwarted, and substitute Zine ensured Angola’s unbeaten run in the group stage.
Angola will now face a third-placed team from Group E or F in the last 16, while Burkina Faso is set to take on the Group E winners in the upcoming knockout stage. Both teams await the conclusion of Groups E and F to determine their last-16 opponents.
