Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi returned to training on Monday, six days after being suspended by the club for travelling to Saudi Arabia without permission.
The Argentine superstar had failed to show up for training last Monday and travelled to fulfil commitments as part of a contract with the country’s tourist office, resulting in his suspension.
However, he apologised on Instagram to his 458 million followers and has now resumed training with the club. “I had organised this trip to Saudi Arabia having cancelled it previously. This time I couldn’t cancel it. I am sorry for what I did and I wait to see what the club decides to do,” he wrote.
PSG hold a six-point lead over Lens with four matches remaining, making it likely that Messi will feature in their upcoming game against relegation-threatened Ajaccio on Saturday.
Despite this, the incident has increased doubts about Messi’s future at PSG beyond the end of his current two-year contract.
