The first half of the match saw Wales take an early lead, with Dan Biggar contributing a try and five points from his boot to give his team a 10-6 advantage going into halftime. However, Argentina’s Emiliano Boffelli managed to edge the Pumas ahead with his fourth penalty in the 48th minute.
Wales wasn’t ready to concede, as Tomos Williams made a lightning-quick dart over the try line, swinging the lead back in their favour. But Argentina struck back when Joel Sclavi dove over from close range, following a successful conversion that put them two points ahead.
The highlight of the match came when Nicolas Sanchez intercepted a pass and scored a crucial try, which sent his jubilant teammates into a frenzy in the in-goal area. Sanchez then sealed the victory with a perfectly executed penalty as the final act of the game, securing Argentina’s place in the last four of the competition.
Reflecting on the intense encounter, the Mastercard Player of the Match, Emiliano Boffelli, said, “It was a difficult match, and I am very happy for the team. Coach Michael Cheika told us at half-time that we needed to keep pushing and that eventually, the game would open up for us.”
Captain Julián Montoya expressed his pride in the team, saying, “We like to be a team that fights for everything. While it was far from perfect, we were heading to Paris. Life is not perfect, and it’s all about embracing the moment, which is what rugby is about. I don’t want this to end; we need to be better, more clinical in many aspects.”
On the other side, Wales captain Jac Morgan admitted it was a “devastating result” for his team, acknowledging their lapses in discipline and errors: “We let them have more possession, and they capitalized on that. We let them into our half, and they got points out of it.”
Head coach Warren Gatland was graceful in defeat, commending Argentina for their tenacity and performance. He also refrained from making sweeping statements about Argentina’s prospects, acknowledging that they wouldn’t be favourites but emphasizing that they’d give their best in the upcoming semi-final.
