London-based football club Arsenal announced the signing of German attacking midfielder Kai Havertz from Chelsea on a “long-term contract” on Wednesday.
While the transfer fee was not disclosed by either club, reports in the British media suggested that Arsenal paid Chelsea around £65 million or €75 million for the player.
Havertz, who joined Chelsea in 2020 from Bayer Leverkusen, has made 139 appearances and scored 32 goals during his three-year stint at the club.
He played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League final victory over Manchester City, scoring the winning goal. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the signing, praising Havertz’s versatility and intelligence on the field.
Havertz himself spoke highly of the mentality within the Arsenal squad and expressed his determination to contribute to the team’s pursuit of trophies.
The acquisition of Havertz marks Arsenal’s first signing of the summer, with reports suggesting that the club is also pursuing a deal for West Ham’s Declan Rice.
