Athletics Kenya Cancels African Games Trials as Tribute to Kiptum
Athletics Kenya (AK) has made the decision to cancel the trials for the All Africa Games, which were originally scheduled for this weekend, out of respect for the late world marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, who tragically lost his life in a car accident.
The incident occurred along the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine road on Sunday night, claiming the lives of Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.
In a statement issued to newsrooms on Wednesday, AK announced the cancellation of the two-day event, which was supposed to take place this Friday and Saturday at Nyayo Stadium.
The statement mentioned that a new selection process would be announced in due course. It read, “Athletics Kenya wishes to inform all athletes and the entire athletics fraternity that the Trials for the African Games, which were scheduled for February 16th and 17th, 2024, at The Nyayo National Stadium, has been cancelled in honor of the late Kelvin Kiptum.”
The trials were intended to be used by AK to assemble a team to represent the country at this year’s All Africa Games, scheduled to take place from March 8th to 23rd in Accra, Ghana.
