Athletics Kenya (AK) is set to send 50 athletes to participate in the second Africa Junior Championships taking place from April 29 to May 3 in Lusaka, Zambia.
The chair for Youth Development at AK, Barnaba Korir, has confirmed that the selection trials for the Under-18 and Under-20 categories will take place this weekend at Nyayo Stadium.
Korir has outlined the selection criteria, stating that any athlete who is 16 or 17 years old on December 31, 2023, will be eligible to compete in the Under-18 category, while athletes aged 18 or 19 on December 31, 2023, will compete in the Under-20 category.
During the first edition of the competition in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 2019, Kenya won the Under-18 overall title and finished second in the Under-20 category.
Korir has expressed the aim of selecting a strong team capable of bringing both titles back home.
Following the trials, the selected athletes will report to camp to begin preparations.
Korir also mentioned that the athletes will be subject to thorough documentation scrutiny to prevent age cheating, with the requirement for identification documents such as passports and birth certificates.
School heads have also been requested to assist in this process.
The two-day event will be classified as a world-ranking event and will be held in conformity with international standards, said Korir.
A huge turnout is expected, with schools being requested to release athletes to participate in the trials.
AK hopes to select a strong team that can bring both titles back to Kenya.
