Iga Swiatek, the world number one, advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after defeating 2020 champion Sofia Kenin with a score of 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

Iga Swiatek, who has never reached the final at the Australian Open, stays focused and acknowledges the unpredictability of facing various opponents in the tournament.

In the next round, Swiatek is set for another challenging encounter against Danielle Collins, the 2022 runner-up, who secured her place by defeating two-time champion Angelique Kerber. Swiatek emphasized the need to be prepared for any opponent, recognizing the diverse range of competitors in tennis.

Reflecting on her performance against Kenin, Swiatek, who has won three French Open titles and the 2022 US Open, acknowledged the initial difficulty in finding her rhythm but commended Kenin’s efforts to maintain pressure. Swiatek extended her winning streak to 17 matches with this victory.

Danielle Collins, who previously beat Swiatek in the 2022 semi-finals, demonstrated her prowess by overcoming Kerber with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Kerber, a three-time Grand Slam champion, recently returned to the tour after a 17-month hiatus for the birth of her child.

In other first-round matches, Belarusian 18th seed Victoria Azarenka secured a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win against Italian Camila Giorgi, setting up a second-round clash with Danish world number 100 Clara Tauson. Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina navigated through a challenging opening match, defeating American Peyton Stearns 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Australian wildcard Olivia Gadecki in Tuesday’s first-round matches at the Australian Open.
