Bayern Munich is set to kick off the new year with a Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim, eyeing a climb in the standings to catch up with league leaders Bayer Leverkusen after a three-week winter break.

The return to Bundesliga action comes amidst the somber atmosphere following the recent passing of German football icon Franz Beckenbauer. Bayern, currently in second place and trailing Leverkusen by four points with a game in hand, faces a challenging restart under coach Thomas Tuchel.

Beckenbauer, a key figure in German football, played a pivotal role in securing the World Cup title for Germany as both a player (1974) and coach (1990). His legacy extends to helping establish Bayern Munich as a European football powerhouse.

Despite Bayern’s pursuit of a record 12th consecutive league title, the team has faced defensive struggles throughout the season, prompting calls for reinforcements. Hoffenheim, known for their attacking prowess with an average of two goals per game in 16 league matches, poses a significant challenge.

While Bayern contends with defensive concerns, the visitors must find a way to contain Bayern’s prolific striker, Harry Kane. The English captain, having made a high-profile move from Tottenham Hotspur in a record-setting transfer, has already notched an impressive 21 goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Hoffenheim coach Pellegrino Matarazzo acknowledges the formidable threat posed by Kane, emphasizing the need for a stellar defensive performance from his team.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, led by coach Xabi Alonso, faces its own challenges as they travel to Augsburg without their top striker, Victor Boniface, and several other absentees. Boniface, who has contributed 10 goals and seven assists in his debut Bundesliga season, is sidelined due to an adductor muscle injury, requiring surgery and ruling him out until at least April.

Leverkusen is further hampered by the absence of key players Odilon Kossounou, Edmond Tapsoba, and Amine Adli, who are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. As they resume their Bundesliga campaign, Leverkusen seeks to overcome these hurdles in their pursuit of the elusive first league title for the club.
