Commonwealth Games 5000m champion, Beatrice Chebet, capped off her year with a remarkable achievement by setting a new world record in the women’s 5km at the Cursa dels Nassos race in Barcelona.
Clocking an impressive 14:13, Chebet smashed the previous record of 14:19 held by Ethiopian Ejegayehu Taye and also surpassed the women-only record of 14:29 set by Senbere Teferi in 2021.
Ethiopian Taye secured the second spot with a time of 14:21, while another Kenyan, Lilian Kasait, claimed third place in 14:26, achieving a personal best.
The intense race saw Chebet and Taye dominating in the final stretch, with Chebet’s exceptional performance securing her the world record with 500 meters to go.
In the men’s category, Kenya’s Matthew Kipkoech Kipruto finished second with a time of 13:18, trailing behind Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu, who clinched first place with a time of 13:12. Spain’s Abdessamad Oukhelfen secured the third position with a time of 13:27.”
