Benson Omalla emerged as the hero for Gor Mahia, scoring twice to secure a 2-0 victory over arch-rivals AFC Leopards at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

Omalla continued his impressive goal-scoring form, finding the back of the net in both halves of the match, taking his tally for the season to six goals and positioning himself as a strong contender for the Golden Boot.

Gor Mahia, currently occupying the second spot in the standings, showcased their prowess in the derby, while AFC Leopards extended their winless streak to six matches, increasing the pressure on head coach Tom Juma.

The game witnessed a thrilling start, with Gor Mahia having an early opportunity in the third minute. Lawrence Juma’s long-range shot was deflected inside the box, falling to Omalla, who was unmarked on the left. However, Leopards’ goalkeeper Levis Opiyo made a remarkable save to deny the close-range effort.

AFC Leopards gradually gained momentum and enjoyed some chances in the 17th and 20th minutes. First, a cross from Cliff Nyakeya reached Boniface Kweyu at the edge of the box, but his volleyed shot sailed over the bar.

Moments later, Victor Otieno attempted a long-range shot, which was well-saved by Gor’s Kevin ‘Saha’ Omondi, resulting in a corner kick.

It was from this corner that Gor Mahia broke the deadlock. The ball was cleared by Kennedy Onyango but fell to Vincent Mahiga, who sent it back into the box.

A powerful defensive header by Geoffrey Ochieng met the ball, and Austin Odhiambo quickly picked it up and set up Omala for the opening goal. Omala expertly chipped the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper Opiyo.

In the second half, Gor Mahia continued to dominate, doubling their lead 15 minutes into the half. Austin Odhiambo, the provider once again, dribbled down the right wing before delivering a low cross that Omalla tapped home for his second goal of the match.

Omalla came close to securing a hat-trick shortly after, but his strong volley was saved by Opiyo, and he missed the rebound opportunity by sending it over the bar.

AFC Leopards made changes, introducing Hassan Beja and Jaffary Owiti for Cliff Nyakeya and Miheso, while Gor Mahia refreshed their midfield with Ernest Wendo, Rodgers Ouma, and Alpha Onyango coming on for Kevin Juma, Lawrence Juma, and Patrick Sibomana.

With these changes, Gor Mahia managed to control the midfield and maintain control of the match. AFC Leopards had a late chance to create tension in the game, but substitute Maxwell Otieno’s effort was brilliantly saved by Gor’s goalkeeper Omondi.
