Brazil’s quest for their 10th Copa America title began with a lackluster 0-0 draw against Costa Rica in Los Angeles. Despite dominating with 73.5 percent possession, the Brazilian squad couldn’t penetrate the solid Costa Rican defense.

A potential lead by Marquinhos was nullified after a VAR review for offside, leaving Brazil frustrated and unable to score throughout the match.

Costa Rica, on the other hand, adopted a defensive stance, not attempting a single shot on goal but successfully thwarting Brazil’s efforts. Dorival Junior, Brazil’s coach, acknowledged Costa Rica’s disciplined defense, noting their unwavering dedication and organization.

In contrast, Colombia emerged victorious in Group D, securing a 2-1 win over Paraguay, thanks to James Rodriguez’s stellar performance. The midfielder, who has seen limited playtime at Sao Paulo, was instrumental in both Colombian goals, assisting Daniel Munoz and Jefferson Lerma to secure the lead.

Colombia’s win places them at the top of Group D, with Rodriguez’s contributions highlighting his potential to revive his club career. Despite Paraguay’s late goal by Julio Enciso, Colombia maintained control and nearly added a third, only to have a penalty decision reversed by VAR.

Looking ahead, Colombia is set to face Costa Rica, while Brazil will conclude their group stage against Colombia on July 2, setting the stage for potentially high-stakes encounters.
