The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant boost in the prize money for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1 to February 28, 2025.
The champion of the tournament will now receive Ksh 453 million (USD 3.5 million), a substantial 75% increase from the previous figure.
CAF has also elevated the total prize money for the tournament to Ksh 1.3 billion (USD 10.4 million), marking a 32% increase. This financial uplift underscores CAF’s commitment to enhancing the profile and competitiveness of the CHAN tournament, which exclusively features players competing in their respective domestic leagues.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming event, stating, “We are excited about the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024 and have significantly increased the winner’s prize money to USD 3.5 million, reflecting a 75% rise.”
Dr. Motsepe further highlighted the strategic importance of the tournament, saying, “This competition is vital for the development of Africa-based football players and young talents. It plays a crucial role in boosting the global competitiveness of African football and CAF competitions. Our strategy focuses on making African football more appealing to fans, TV audiences, sponsors, partners, and stakeholders worldwide.”
The CHAN 2024 promises to be a landmark event, with 17 nations already confirmed to participate, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar. Two additional teams will secure their places through the remaining qualification matches.
As East Africa gears up to host this prestigious event, the increase in prize money signifies a robust investment in the region’s football infrastructure and a commitment to elevating the sport’s stature on the continent.
