The African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, initially scheduled to take place from February 1-28, 2024, in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, has been postponed to August 2025.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the rescheduling to ensure that the host nations have sufficient time to prepare adequately for the event.
In a statement released by CAF, technical and infrastructure experts recommended the postponement to allow the three East African nations to enhance their facilities to meet the necessary standards for hosting the prestigious tournament. “CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, some of whom have been stationed in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, have advised that more time is required to bring the infrastructure and facilities to the requisite level for a successful CHAN tournament,” read part of the statement.
The decision comes as a relief for Kenya, which was under pressure to complete renovations at Kasarani Stadium. The postponement offers the country additional time to ensure that all preparations are completed without compromising quality.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe commended the leadership of the host nations, expressing confidence in their commitment to delivering a world-class tournament. “I extend my deep gratitude to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership and the significant progress made in upgrading stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure,” Motsepe said.
He added, “I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations across the three countries. I am confident that by August 2025, all facilities will meet CAF standards, ensuring a highly successful CHAN tournament.”
The draw for the CHAN tournament is set to take place today in Nairobi, with the exact dates in August 2025 to be announced later.
The tournament’s rescheduling reflects CAF’s commitment to ensuring that the competition is held under optimal conditions, showcasing the best of African football on a grand stage.
