After clinching victory at the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza in Elgoibar, Spain, Beatrice Chebet is optimistic about her future in athletics.
In an exclusive interview, Chebet sees her recent win as a catalyst for a promising season and promises more surprises to come.
The World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting showcased her prowess as she dominated the competition, finishing first with a time of 25:21, ahead of Uganda’s Sarah Chelangat (25:36) and Edinah Jebitok (25:44).
Chebet, a National Police Service officer, believes there is unfinished business on the track. She plans to participate in a race in Eldoret on February 3 and then head to Belgrade to defend her world cross-country title, aiming to replicate the success she achieved in Barthust, Australia, last February.
With the Commonwealth Games 5000m crown secured, Chebet is setting her sights on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She expresses confidence in her skills, targeting a podium finish and aspiring to claim the gold medal at the global event in July and August.
Chebet’s track record includes a gold medal in the 5km race at the World Road Running Championships in Riga, where she recorded the fifth-fastest time in the history of the 5km road race. Her trophy cabinet also boasts a gold from the World Cross Country Championship in Bathurst, Australia, in February.
Despite facing tough competition in the 5000m at the World Championships in Belgrade, Hungary, where she finished behind Faith Kipyegon and Sifan Hassan, Chebet remains undeterred.
She is determined to reclaim her position in the 12-lap race and sees the presence of Faith Kipyegon as an inspiration, emphasizing the importance of a strong team for Kenya in Paris. Chebet is poised to make significant contributions to her country’s athletic success.
