Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed concerns about his squad’s maturity to cope with the demands of playing in the Premier League every three days after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Sheffield United on Sunday.
Thiago Silva opened the scoring for Chelsea at Bramall Lane, but Jayden Bogle equalized for Sheffield United before halftime. Noni Madueke restored Chelsea’s lead in the 66th minute, only for Ollie McBurnie to snatch an equalizer for United in stoppage time.
This draw follows Chelsea’s previous dropped points in a 2-2 draw with relegation-threatened Burnley in March, leading Pochettino to attribute the challenges to the packed schedule taking its toll on his team.
Acknowledging the tiredness among his players, Pochettino emphasized that fatigue cannot be an excuse for failing to secure a win against Sheffield United. He noted the importance of readiness to compete in every game, particularly against lower-ranked teams like Sheffield United.
Pochettino also explained his decision to substitute top scorer Cole Palmer in the 74th minute as a precautionary measure to protect the player and prevent future issues.
With Chelsea currently sitting ninth in the league table, they are set to face Everton next before a crucial FA Cup semifinal clash against Manchester City on April 20.
