Gareth Southgate has made last-minute additions to the England squad for their final two Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
In response to injuries sidelining James Maddison, Lewis Dunk, and Callum Wilson, Southgate has included Cole Palmer, Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, and Rico Lewis from Manchester City.
Cole Palmer, the promising Chelsea forward, has been rewarded for his impressive performances this season. Notably, he secured a late call-up after his standout contribution to Chelsea’s thrilling 4-4 draw with Manchester City, where he netted a stoppage-time equalizer from the penalty spot.
Palmer, part of the England Under-21 team that clinched the European Championship in July, made headlines with his unexpected £42 million move from Manchester City to Chelsea in September.
The 21-year-old has quickly adapted to life at Stamford Bridge, showcasing his talent with four goals for Chelsea. Southgate recognizes Palmer’s potential and has included him in the squad to bolster England’s attacking options.
In addition to Palmer, Southgate has brought in Ezri Konsa, the reliable centre-back from Aston Villa, and Rico Lewis, a defender from Manchester City. These adjustments aim to maintain the squad’s strength as they prepare for the upcoming qualifiers.
Already having secured their place in the Euro 2024 finals in Germany, England will host Malta at Wembley on Friday before heading to North Macedonia for the final qualifying match three days later.
