Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba inaugurated the inaugural athletes’ training camp in Isiolo County as part of the Talanta Hela Program On Tuesday.

This launch marks a significant step in the Ministry of Sports’ comprehensive initiative to foster athletic talent from the grassroots level. The camp, situated at Kinna Primary School in Garbatula Sub-County, represents the first-ever talent development center in the northern region of Kenya.

During the ceremony, the CS reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to providing financial support to the camp and committed to enhancing stadium infrastructure in the area. Namwamba encouraged local athletes to recognize their potential and compete on equal footing with their counterparts.

Pointing to the shared genetic makeup between the Oromos of Ethiopia and the residents of Isiolo, Namwamba emphasized the region’s potential to produce top-tier athletes. He expressed, “If you hear names like Haile Gebrselassie in Ethiopia, it means that the next Selassie can come from Isiolo. Determination is the key.” The CS outlined plans to uplift the camp, ensure proper clothing for athletes, and extend financial support.

Namwamba also advocated for the diversification of sports in the region, urging residents to embrace activities like football. “Most importantly, as we do this launch, I would like us to give attention to other sports as well such as football.”

The Isiolo camp is the second project under the Talanta Hela Program, following Chepkemel in Uasin Gishu County.

This collaborative effort between Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports aims to establish over 42 camps nationwide, further solidifying Kenya’s commitment to nurturing and developing athletic prowess across the country.
