David Raya’s faith in his abilities has always driven him to become Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper, although he acknowledges that his selection for the north London derby is not guaranteed.
The Spanish international joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford this summer, with a likely permanent transfer for £27 million planned for next year.
Raya was brought in to compete with Aaron Ramsdale for the goalkeeper position and made his Arsenal debut in last weekend’s 1-0 win against Everton. He retained his place in the team for Wednesday’s 4-0 Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven.
Arsenal’s decision to sign Raya to compete with Ramsdale drew criticism and caution from some pundits, but manager Mikel Arteta believes he can keep both goalkeepers satisfied.
When asked if he believed he could displace Ramsdale after the England goalkeeper’s strong performances last season, Raya responded, “Of course, every player has to believe in themselves and their ability to earn a spot in the team. That’s why I moved to Arsenal, to do my best for the team when I’m selected.”
“You never know when you’re going to play, and that’s the toughest part. Making your debut for a club like Arsenal, and having Aaron as a teammate makes it a bit more challenging, but it happened quickly. You never know when your opportunity will come, and you have to be ready.”
“It’s a dream come true to play at the highest level, so I’m very pleased to make my debut. But the main thing was the result, and we got the three points in the end, so that’s the most important thing.”
Raya is expected to keep his place in goal for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham, even though Arteta has suggested that he may rotate his goalkeepers during matches, not just between fixtures.
“I understand that, and I think it’s the first time that two top goalkeepers are on the same team,” Raya commented on the possibility of switching goalkeepers.
“That’s just part of football now, and the manager wants two top players for each position, and that’s what we have to work with. I’ve played the last two games, and now we’ll see what happens on Sunday.”
“I’ve just been selected for the last two games, that’s the manager’s choice, not mine. When Aaron comes in, he will also have to fight for the team and to win games.”
“He (Ramsdale) has been great, he’s a great teammate, a leader as well. He’s a great guy and a great goalkeeper. We’re teammates at the end of the day.”
