In a reminiscent scenario of 2012, the battle for the 2022-23 FKF Premier League championship will come to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday at 5 pm.
The title race has boiled down to perennial champions Gor Mahia FC and reigning holders Tusker FC.
With just a single point separating the two teams at the top of the league standings, Gor Mahia currently leads with 67 points, closely followed by Tusker FC with 66 points.
The destiny of the championship is firmly in Gor Mahia’s hands, courtesy of Tusker’s failure to capitalize on their defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz in the previous weekend.
The situation mirrors the 2012 season when Gor Mahia hosted Thika United at the City Stadium, knowing that their fate rested in their own hands, while City Stars faced Tusker FC at the Hope Centre.
In the present scenario, Gor Mahia will face City Stars at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, while Tusker FC will travel to play against the already relegated Vihiga Bullets at the Mumias Sports Complex.
Tusker FC will be hoping for a favourable outcome from the City Stars match, aiming for a draw or better, while simultaneously seeking victory against Bullets on the road.
Gor Mahia, on the other hand, can reclaim the title by securing a win over “Simba wa Nairobi,” regardless of Tusker’s result in Western Kenya.
If Gor Mahia drops points and Tusker emerges victorious, the brewers will retain their crown, securing their 13th league title. It’s worth noting that the previous season’s triumph was declared null and void by the Federation.
Tusker’s captain, Humphrey Mieno, expressed determination, stating, “We will just go there and do what we have to do and hope things turn in our favour. We cannot be cry babies and start wishing for different circumstances,” following their recent 1-1 draw against Posta Rangers.
In their previous encounters this season, Tusker secured a 2-0 victory over Bullets in Nairobi, while Gor Mahia triumphed with a 1-0 win against City Stars.
