Novak Djokovic secured his fourth US Open title and 24th Grand Slam singles title with a straight-set victory over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday.
Djokovic, at 36, became the oldest men’s champion in New York during the Open era and matched Margaret Court’s all-time record for the most Grand Slam victories.
Djokovic, in his white jacket adorned with the number 24 during the trophy presentation, expressed his immense joy, stating, “I don’t know where to start. It obviously means the world to me.” He further added, “I’m really living my childhood dream to compete at the highest level in this sport.”
This triumph added to his earlier victories at the Australian and French Opens this year, with Wimbledon being the only Grand Slam where he faced defeat.
Djokovic’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic, praised him as a sports genius and one-of-a-kind. He described Djokovic’s achievement as “one of the biggest achievements in sport’s history.”
Medvedev, who had previously defeated Djokovic in the 2021 final, humorously questioned Djokovic’s longevity in the sport, saying, “First of all I want to ask Novak: What are you still doing here? Come on!” He added, “I don’t know when you are planning to slow down a little bit.”
Despite an attempt to resist, Medvedev couldn’t consistently match Djokovic’s performance, and Djokovic emerged victorious in straight sets. Djokovic won 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.
This victory solidified Djokovic’s reputation as one of the greatest tennis players in history, with his fourth US Open title joining his impressive list of achievements.
