Novak Djokovic, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, reassured fans of his well-being and readiness to continue competing after a mishap at the Rome Open where he was struck by a water bottle.
The incident occurred while Djokovic was engaging with fans, resulting in a momentary scare as he was seen in discomfort on the court. However, he later confirmed via social media that he was resting and would return to play on Sunday.
Djokovic had a strong start in Rome, defeating France’s Corentin Moutet with ease to progress to the next round. His upcoming match against Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo is part of his preparation for the upcoming French Open, where he aims to add to his impressive tally of six Rome titles.
Concerns arose about Djokovic’s ability to continue in the tournament, but organizers have since clarified that his condition is stable, attributing the incident to an accidental slip from a fan.
The Rome Open, a key event leading up to the French Open, has seen several top players withdraw, including Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The absence of local favorites Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti has also been felt by the home crowd.
Rafael Nadal, Djokovic’s renowned rival on clay, is making his return to the court against Hubert Hurkacz. Nadal’s participation in the French Open hinges on his physical condition following recent injuries that have impacted his ranking.
The tournament features a lineup of tennis stars, including women’s number one Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and men’s second seed Daniil Medvedev, all competing under the Roman sun. Swiatek enters the tournament fresh from her victory at the Madrid Open, facing Yulia Putintseva in her next match.
