Eliud Kipchoge Bags Ksh. 7.4m After being Honored with Princess Asturias Award

Eliud Kipchoge, the world marathon record holder, has been bestowed with the prestigious Princess Asturias Award for Sports 2023 by the Spanish foundation.

Along with a prize of sh 7.4 million, Kipchoge was presented with a symbolic Joan Miro sculpture, a diploma, and a tribute from Princess Leonor of Asturias, symbolizing his remarkable achievements.

The foundation emphasized that the award is given to individuals who exemplify the unifying power of sports, fostering solidarity and dedication. In response, Kipchoge expressed his gratitude in a tweet, stating that the recognition further fuels his ambition to leave a lasting legacy in athletics.

Receiving the Princess of Asturias Award is a tremendous honor for Kipchoge, who acknowledges the exceptional individuals from diverse backgrounds who have been recognized before him. He believes that a world embracing running is a world of peace, happiness, and improved well-being.

Kipchoge extended his heartfelt appreciation to Her Royal Highness The Princess of Asturias, as well as her parents, Their Majesties The King and Queen of Spain, for bestowing this prestigious honor upon him.

Renowned for his extraordinary feats, Kipchoge notably achieved the incredible milestone of completing a marathon in under two hours during the Ineos challenge in Vienna, Austria. Additionally, he holds the world record for the fastest marathon time of 2:01:09, set in Berlin.
