Emmanuel Wanyonyi Sets Sights at Budapest World Championships

The reigning 2021 World Under 20 champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi showcased his exceptional talent once more as he successfully defended his Kip Keino Classic 800m title.

The 20-year-old middle-distance sensation left the crowd in awe, setting a personal best and world-leading time of 1:43.32 at the electrifying Moi Stadium, Kasarani.

In a highly competitive race, Wycliffe Kinyamal, the Commonwealth Games winner, secured second place with a commendable time of 1:43.36.

Notably, Timothy Cheruiyot, the Olympic 1500m silver medalist, crossed the finish line in third place, recording a time of 1:44.99.

Reflecting on his victory, Wanyonyi expressed his confidence in securing a spot on Team Kenya for the upcoming 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. “Winning the Kip Keino Classic and setting a personal best reaffirms that I’m on the right path towards Budapest,” Wanyonyi declared with determination.

Wanyonyi admitted that facing such a formidable field of competitors stirred some initial nerves. However, he swiftly overcame his anxieties, seizing control of the demanding race. “Defending my title was a priority. The strong lineup challenged me, but I was determined to prevail,” he revealed.

Adding to his triumph, Wanyonyi revealed a wager he made with his coach before the race, promising him a reward if he could break the meeting record. “My coach must be delighted right now. We made a deal, and I’m glad I could fulfil it,” he remarked.

While basking in his recent success, Wanyonyi remains fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead. With athletes of the calibre of Kinyamal, Elias Ngeny, Nicholas Kebenei, Ferguson Rotich, and Collins Kipruto vying for a spot on Team Kenya, Wanyonyi acknowledged the intense competition. “I understand that making the team won’t be easy, but I’m prepared to give it my all,” he affirmed.

As Wanyonyi sets his sights on the World Championships, his resolute determination and outstanding performance at the Kip Keino Classic serve as a testament to his immense talent and potential on the global stage.
