England secured their spot in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals thanks to a crucial victory by Japan over Samoa, which also enhanced Japan’s own chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

Japan triumphed over Samoa, with Pieter Labuschagne, Michael Leitch, and Kazuki Himeno scoring tries, supported by the accurate kicking of Rikiya Matsuda.

Samoa’s woes were compounded when their winger, Ben Lam, received a red card. Although Samoa made a late rally, they now face the daunting task of defeating England to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

However, England’s position at the top of Pool D is now secure, as Samoa can no longer catch up to their current point total. England also holds a superior head-to-head record against Japan and Argentina. This means that England’s final pool game against Samoa on October 7th can be approached with less pressure, and England may choose to rest key players ahead of an expected quarter-final match against Fiji.

Both Japan and Samoa entered the match in Toulouse with hopes of advancing from Pool D, but victory was essential for either team to stay in contention.

Japan, aiming for a second consecutive appearance in the quarter-finals, began the game strongly, scoring their first try just 13 minutes in. Lomano Lemeki made a strong drive, breaking through two Samoan defenders before being stopped five meters from the try line. The ball found its way to Labuschagne, who powered over for the score.

After a series of penalties exchanged between the teams, Japan seized control of the match, scoring their second try while Samoa had a player sin-binned. Jonathan Taumateine was yellow-carded for an off-the-ball tackle during the build-up to Leitch’s try. Japan’s quick ball movement on the left side left Samoa struggling to keep up.

This turn of events ignited Samoa, who had not reached the knockout stage in 28 years. When Japan’s hooker, Shota Horie, was sin-binned, both teams had 14 players, and Samoa capitalized with Seilala Lam touching down after a powerful maul.

Samoa’s discipline, however, proved to be their downfall. Early in the second half, Ben Lam was shown a yellow card for a high tackle and a nasty head clash, which was later upgraded. Himeno scored for Japan following another maul.

Samoa clawed back into the game, securing a losing bonus point with tries from Duncan Paia’aua and Christian Leali’ifano, but Japan’s Matsuda sealed the victory with his reliable kicking.

Japan, seeking to replicate their performance as hosts four years ago when they reached the knockout stage, now face a crucial showdown with Argentina on October 8th, a match that may determine who advances to the quarter-finals.
