Enyimba secured their record ninth Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title after a 1-1 draw with defending champions Rivers United in the final match of the NPFL Super Six in Lagos on Sunday.
The People’s Elephants entered the final match in pole position, following a dominant 3-0 victory over Sunshine Stars, which propelled them to the top of the table on goal difference after four matchdays.
Enyimba started strongly and took the lead through Ekene Azawie’s 39th-minute goal. However, three minutes into the second half, Nyima Nekabari Nwagua equalized for Rivers United.
The draw proved enough for Enyimba to reclaim the title and secure a spot in the prestigious continental competition, having missed out on the CAF competition in 2022. They finished the NPFL Super Six campaign with nine points, edging Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance on superior goal difference.
Remo Stars secured their first-ever TotalEnergies CAF Champions League spot with a 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance, thanks to Qudus Akanni’s winning goal.
Rivers United, as the third-placed team with nine points and a goal difference of plus two, settled for the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
Sunshine Stars defeated Lobi Stars 3-1, finishing fourth with five points and securing a spot in the continental competition ahead of Lobi Stars and Bendel Insurance, who finished fifth and sixth with three and two points respectively.
