Equatorial Guinea reach Afcon 2025 after Togo lose

Posted on

Equatorial Guinea has clinched their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, securing qualification without stepping onto the pitch after Togo fell to Liberia in their penultimate Group E qualifier on Wednesday.

Togo’s Sparrowhawks, who needed a win to keep their qualification hopes alive, were defeated 1-0 in Monrovia by Liberia’s Lone Stars. Mohammed Sangare’s penalty in the 83rd minute sealed Togo’s fate, as they now miss out on a fourth consecutive AFCON appearance, with their last participation dating back to the 2017 tournament in Gabon.

Equatorial Guinea’s National Thunder, now assured of a top-two finish in Group E, have two remaining games, hosting Algeria on Thursday (13:00 GMT) and traveling to Togo on Sunday. With Algeria already qualified, these games will determine the final rankings, but Equatorial Guinea’s place in Morocco is secure.

This qualification adds the Central African nation to the growing list of teams confirmed for the tournament, joining Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, and Senegal in the 2025 AFCON lineup.

Equatorial Guinea will look to build on their recent success, having advanced to the last 16 at the 2023 Nations Cup held in Ivory Coast earlier this year.
