Basketball Hawks Equity Bank was on Friday night declared undisputed Sterling Gold Cup Ladies 2022 Champions for the second time after they beat Zetech University 62- 57 in the finals at Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena.
It was a sweet victory as the champions Equity Bank walked away with cash prize KSH 100,000 and a trophy while Zetech Sparks bagged KSH. 50,000.
In game one, Hawks embarked swiftly with National team skipper Melissa Akinyi points from beyond the arc. However, Zetech Sparks kept their hunt in the second quarter and almost handed the bankers a comeback blow.
Gracing the event was the Secretary -General Kenya Basketball Federation Mr. Ambrose Kisoi and Principal Secretary (PS) State Department of Housing And Urban Development of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development of the Republic of Kenya Mr. Charles Hinga Mwaura.
Led by coach Samba Mjomba and David Maina, the bankers were elated by the victory and now confident to defend the title again in the next Championship. Equity Betty Maithima Kananu, who was crowned Gold Cup championship Most Valuable Player, topped with higher points.
Team Bears won the playoffs in a tight competition against Phoenix. They walked away with KSH. 30,000 while Phoenix bagged KSH.20, 000.
In the Sterling Men’s All Star, West team defeated East team with Rapudo and Bosire leading the teams respectively.
Sterling Gold Cup is a ladies’ basketball Championship aimed at nurturing and developing women’s basketball in the Country.
