The Equity Hawks soared high this weekend in the Kenya Basketball Federation Women’s Premier League, securing a dominant 77-32 win over Strathmore University.
This victory at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium on Sunday followed their win against Africa Nazarene University (ANU) on Saturday, propelling them to a joint lead in the league standings.
Jemimah Omondi led the charge for the Hawks with a stellar 13-point performance, closely followed by Betty Kananu with 12 points and Rachel Akinyi with 11 points. The team showed significant improvement from their previous game, displaying better shooting accuracy and control over the court.
Equity coach Ben Oluoch acknowledged the team’s initial rustiness due to a break from play but was pleased with their recovery and execution of strategy in the second game. He plans to focus on offensive drills in the upcoming practice sessions to further enhance the team’s performance.
Strathmore University put up a fight in the first quarter, but the Hawks’ experience and tactical play saw them leading early on. The second quarter saw the Hawks tighten their defense, limiting Strathmore to just four points while extending their own lead.
As the game progressed, the Hawks maintained their momentum, with Omondi’s agility and precise passing playing a key role. The final quarter allowed for squad rotation, giving all players valuable time on the court.
In a parallel match in Mombasa, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) displayed their championship mettle with a resounding 96-27 victory over JKUAT.
Grace Malu of KPA was the standout player, contributing 18 points and seven rebounds to the win. The team’s collective effort was evident, with multiple players scoring in double digits, showcasing their depth and skill level.
Point guard Carol Omondi also made a notable impact with her all-around play. The weekend’s results have set the stage for an exciting continuation of the league, with teams vying for the top spot.
