The Equity Hawks soared past Zetech University Sparks with a decisive 61-46 victory in the fifth game of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League semi-finals in a thrilling display of skill and determination.
This win secured their spot in the upcoming final against the reigning champions, Kenya Ports Authority.
The Hawks emerged victorious in the semi-final series with a 3-2 lead, redeeming themselves from the previous season’s 3-0 defeat by the University team. The competition was fierce as both teams were tied at 1-1 before the weekend’s matches. Zetech initially took the lead by winning the third game, but the Hawks made a remarkable comeback, clinching the fourth game with a 56-33 win and sealing their triumph in the fifth.
Equity Hawks’ head coach, Ben Oluoch, expressed his pride in the team’s performance, particularly praising their improved defense which played a crucial role in their success. “The girls stepped up and delivered outstanding basketball in these crucial games. We’ve made significant strides, and our sights are now set on the final. We aim to continue this momentum and strive for excellence,” he remarked.
MaryAnne Nyagaki led the scoring for the Hawks with 13 points and six rebounds, closely followed by Betty Kananu with 11 points and eight rebounds. Jemimah Omondi also made a notable contribution with 10 points.
Zetech University Sparks faced challenges without their star player, Madina Okot, which impacted their performance, particularly in rebounding. Naomi Bosibori stood out for Zetech with a game-high 16 points, and Maureen Bosibori added 12 points and seven rebounds to the effort.
The stage is now set for a showdown between Equity Hawks and Kenya Ports Authority, who effortlessly defeated Strathmore University with a 3-0 series win, highlighted by an 84-45 victory in the third game at Makande Gymnasium. The upcoming final promises to be a captivating encounter as the Hawks aim to dethrone the current champions.
