Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from next week’s ATP Montreal Masters, citing fatigue following his Wimbledon and French Open titles and his current run to the Paris Olympic semi-finals.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, who is preparing to compete for a second US Open title when the year’s final Grand Slam begins on August 26, expressed his regret over the decision.
“It has been a very long season for me and due to the accumulation of matches and fatigue, I will not be able to play in Montreal this year,” Alcaraz said. “I was really looking forward to coming back to Canada and enjoying the love of the fans. Hope to see everyone in Montreal in the years to come.”
Currently ranked third, Alcaraz holds a 37-6 record this season. He still plans to participate in the Masters tune-up event later this month in Cincinnati, where he was a finalist last year.
Alcaraz’s record in Canada includes a loss in his opener in 2022 and reaching the quarter-finals last year. Tournament director Valerie Tetreault commented on the news, saying, “We’re obviously disappointed that Carlos will not be with us this year. We were also well aware that he has had a busy summer and is currently on a quest to achieve a major feat: winning consecutive French Open, Wimbledon and Olympic titles.”
Additionally, organizers announced the withdrawals of 26th-ranked Francisco Cerundolo and 30th-ranked Jiri Lehecka. These moves allowed American Marcos Giron (ranked 38th), Australia’s Alexei Popyrin (ranked 63rd), and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli (ranked 48th) into the Montreal main draw.
