Blazers, a former champion team, secured a 4-0 victory against Dutch Flower Group Wolverines in the Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier League match held at City Park Stadium in Nairobi on Saturday.
Kenyan international forward Maureen Okumu scored two brilliant goals in the 21st and 35th minutes, adding to Namureng Chebet’s fifth-minute opener.
Joan Anjao also made her way onto the scoreboard with a goal in the 25th minute. The win placed Blazers in the second position on the standings with six points from two matches, five points behind defending champions Strathmore University Scorpions.
The Scorpions had earlier defeated Kenyatta University Titans 2-1 at the same venue. Lakers and Amira Sailors, with four points each from two matches, were relegated to third and fourth positions, respectively, but Lakers had a better goal difference. The Blazers were set to play the Titans on Sunday.
After the match, Okumu stated that her aim was to be the top scorer by the end of the season. Blazers remained unbeaten in two matches, showing their determination to reclaim the trophy they lost to Strathmore last season.
In the men’s Premier League, Butali Sugar Warriors and Western Jaguars played out a 2-2 draw at Eregi Teacher College in Kakamega County.
The draw prevented Butali from extending their lead on the table, leaving them with eight points from four matches, two points ahead of Sikh Union Club and Sailors, who had also played four matches each. Sikh was scheduled to play against winless Greensharks, while Sailors were not in action that weekend.
In the men’s Super League, the University of Eldoret (UoE) won 3-1 against Nakuru Hockey Club at their home ground. Emmanuel Wekesa, John Olango, and Leanor Odhiambo scored for the hosts, cancelling out Jacob Githinji’s 13th-minute opener.
