Former Gor Mahia’s Coach McKinstry Appointed Gambia’s Head Football Coach
Jonathan McKinstry has been appointed as the head coach of the Gambia national football team on a two-year deal, with a key objective to qualify the team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The seasoned 38-year-old coach from Northern Ireland was selected from a pool of 90 candidates, making it to the final shortlist of three.
The Gambian National Sports Council, under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, expressed their pleasure in confirming McKinstry’s role, emphasizing the significance of his extensive African coaching background.
McKinstry’s appointment marks his fourth leadership role with an African national team, having previously managed Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and Uganda. His most recent accomplishment includes leading Gor Mahia to their 21st FKF Premier League championship.
He succeeds Tom Saintfiet, who resigned in January after a notable tenure that saw Gambia reach the quarter-finals of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, a historic first for the Scorpions.
