Joe Schmidt, the former Ireland head coach, has been named as the new head coach for Australia, succeeding Eddie Jones.
Schmidt’s two-year contract is set to begin in March and extend until the conclusion of the next British and Irish Lions tour in 2025.
The 58-year-old New Zealander, who previously served as a selector and assistant coach for the All Blacks, led Ireland from 2013 to 2019, achieving significant successes, including three Six Nations titles and a historic victory over New Zealand.
Schmidt takes over the Wallabies following a challenging 2023, marked by a disappointing World Cup performance. Acknowledging the time-consuming nature of the rebuilding process, Schmidt emphasizes his commitment to working hard for Australia’s success.
His first competition will be this summer’s Rugby Championship, with an eye on the 2025 Lions tour of Australia. Rugby Australia director Peter Horne emphasizes Schmidt’s impressive demeanor, logical approach, and leadership qualities in structural reform and player development.
