Former rugby player Alex Olaba has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in a separate case where he threatened to kill a witness related to a rape charge.

Olaba, who was a member of the national Sevens team, was arrested in 2021 after unknowingly approaching an undercover police officer seeking assistance in eliminating a witness scheduled to testify against him in the rape case.

The initial conviction in 2020 resulted in a 15-year prison sentence for Olaba and his fellow rugby player, Frank Wanyama, for the gang rape offence. However, the conviction was later overturned due to a technicality regarding the swearing-in of a key witness.

Following the retrial, Olaba and Wanyama were released on bail of Ksh 300,000. The alleged rape incident took place in 2018 at an apartment in Highrise.
