Caroline Wozniacki, former world number one, made a remarkable announcement on Thursday as she revealed her return to professional tennis after a three-year hiatus to start a family.

The 32-year-old tennis star bid farewell to the sport in 2020, having achieved an impressive record of 30 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) titles, including her memorable triumph at the Australian Open in 2018.

Taking to Twitter, Wozniacki expressed her excitement about the decision, saying, “Over these past three years away from the game, I got to make up for lost time with my family. I became a mother and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful for.” She added, “But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter your age or role. We decided as a family it’s time. I’m coming back to play, and I can’t wait!”

Wozniacki, who shares two children with former NBA player David Lee, namely two-year-old Olivia and James, born in October last year, revealed her plans to participate in the US Open.

In an article for Vogue Magazine, she expressed her affinity for the electric atmosphere in New York, where she has consistently performed well in the past. She said, “There’s just an electric atmosphere in New York that I can’t get enough of, and I’ve played so well there for years and years.”

The Danish tennis player also highlighted her intentions to participate in the Montreal tournament from August 7-13 to regain her rhythm before heading to New York. She has reached the finals of the US Open twice before.

Looking ahead, Wozniacki mentioned her preparation for the Australian Open and expressed her ambition to participate in the Paris Olympics.

She reflected on her career, mentioning her ascent to world number one in 2010 and her retirement due to battling rheumatoid arthritis after the Australian Open in 2020.

Several notable tennis players, including Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, and Victoria Azarenka, have successfully returned to the sport after becoming mothers. Inspired by their achievements, Wozniacki aims to prove that it is possible to balance a thriving career with the joys of family life.

She commended Williams for her accomplishments and expressed gratitude for her continuous support and encouragement.

With a strong belief in her abilities, Wozniacki concluded, “Am I nervous? Not really. I’m coming back to something I love. Can I win the US Open? I think so. Can I win the Australian Open? I think so. That’s why I’m doing this. And I guess we’ll see what happens.”

Wozniacki’s return to professional tennis after a significant personal journey has generated great anticipation among fans and players alike. Her determination to make an impact on the court once again serves as an inspiration for athletes worldwide.
