Renowned Jamaican sprinter and multiple Olympic and world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has been confirmed to participate in this year’s Kipkeino Classic Continental Tour scheduled for May 13.
Fraser-Pryce, who is the reigning world 100m champion, kick-started her 2022 season at the same event held at the Kasarani Stadium, which set the stage for her remarkable gold medal-winning performance at the World Championships in Oregon, USA.
The 36-year-old athlete will commence her 2023 campaign at the Botswana Grand Prix, another leg of the World Athletics Continental Tour, taking place on April 29, just two weeks prior to the Kipkeino Classic.
Fraser-Pryce is slated to compete in the women’s 100m race, making her the first foreign entry for the event, which is now in its fourth year.
“I am coming back to Nairobi on May 13 for the Kipkeino Classic, and I will be racing in the 100m race,” said Fraser-Pryce. “Last year was fantastic, with the stadium filled with excitement and so much fun. Make sure you get your tickets early, fill the Stadium, and witness fast times. See you in Nairobi.”
Fraser-Pryce wowed the Kasarani crowd with her electrifying performance during her maiden appearance on African soil last year.
She secured the 100m title with a world-leading time of 10.67, leaving her closest challenger, Bassant Hemida of Egypt, far behind with a time of 11.02.
Christine Mboma of Namibia, who was touted as Fraser-Pryce’s main rival and is the Olympic 200m silver medalist, did not finish the race last year due to a severe injury that ultimately prevented her from participating in the World Championships.
