Homa Bay’s Raila Odinga Stadium will host the inaugural Genowa 10-a-side rugby tournament this weekend, marking the beginning of an exciting annual sporting event.
Organized by tournament coordinator Shellan Nyawira, the tournament has already received confirmation from 13 participating teams.
The tournament’s format will include a schools’ competition on Friday, followed by the main tournament on Saturday and Sunday. It serves as a valuable opportunity for teams to prepare for the upcoming 15-a-side rugby season, making it a crucial fixture on the rugby calendar.
Notably, Nationwide side teams, which rarely get opportunities to participate in such tournaments, are among the confirmed participants.
The lineup of teams features prominent rugby clubs, including Kenya Cup returnees Kisumu RFC, Championship side Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Moi University, Maseno University, Homa Bay RFC, and Rongo RFC. While 13 teams have expressed interest, the tournament will follow a 12-team format, with one team expected to withdraw.
In the schools’ division, several educational institutions have confirmed their participation. These schools include Homa Bay High, Mbita High, Aluor Mixed, Otaro Mixed, Agoro Sare, Ober Boys, and J.J. Masime’s Anjego Mixed. Additionally, the women’s division will feature teams such as Aluor Mixed, Otaro Mixed, Rongo University, and Koru Girls.
The Genowa 10-a-side rugby tournament has garnered support from various sponsors, including Renegade Air, Homa Bay County Government, KCB, Phillip Aroko Foundation, Cold Springs Hotel, Belmont Hotel, Lucozade, and Sharur Tours and Travels.
While details of cash awards are yet to be finalized, the organizers are committed to ensuring a successful and competitive tournament.
